Inspiration

Our team wanted to provide additional resources to combat the challenge of online school. Young students, especially those of elementary age, need more attention to their schooling. However, teaching from Zoom makes it difficult for educators to give each student enough attention. This results in students who are falling behind in class and have difficulty with their homework because they do not have their misconceptions cleared up enough.

What CheckUp does

CheckUp is designed to be a platform for tutors to reach students and vice versa. We wanted to simulate the school environment of being able to stop by a teacher's room after school and ask a few questions. So, both tutors and students can sign into CheckUp and make accounts using their school system's Gsuite for Education accounts. Tutors then choose what subject to tutor and send their Zoom links to the students.

How We built it

Our team used Django, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Google API.

Challenges we ran into

This was our first college-level hackathon! Maya and Shehzad learned HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and James learned Django and the Google API.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we could make something functional despite using completely new languages! Despite being a very simple app, it works!

What we learned

We figured out how to do Google API and Web dev from online tutorials! Also, the mentors were super helpful in recommending us APIs and IDEs!

What's next for CheckUp?

We plan to continue developing the site and establishing servers to host our site remotely. We also plan to offer our app to school communities to try out with their students.
