Inspiration

Independent fashion designers often invest in manufacturing collections without knowing what customers actually want. This leads to financial risks, unsold inventory, and unnecessary waste.

We wanted to reverse this process. What if customers could try on clothing before it even existed and help designers decide what to manufacture?

That's how Unmade was born.

What it does

Unmade is a fashion demand-validation platform that connects designers with customers before production begins.

Designers can create clothing drops, upload proposed designs, set prices, and define reservation targets.

Customers can explore these collections, virtually try on garments using Perfect Corp's YouCam AI Clothes API, compare different looks, and reserve their favorites without making a payment.

Designers can then track customer interest, virtual try-ons, and verified reservations through their dashboard to make more informed production decisions.

Instead of manufacturing first and discovering demand later, Unmade brings customers into the process before production.

How we built it

We built Unmade using:

  • Next.js for the frontend and backend.
  • SQLite for storing designers, collections, designs, and reservations.
  • Perfect Corp's YouCam AI Clothes API for realistic virtual clothing try-ons.
  • Tailwind CSS for a responsive, modern interface.

The application has two separate experiences: a private Designer Studio for managing collections and tracking demand, and a public Showroom where customers can virtually try on proposed garments and reserve their favorites.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was integrating virtual try-on with clothing concepts that haven't been physically manufactured.

We also had to design a reservation system that captures meaningful customer interest without requiring payments, while keeping the customer experience simple.

Another challenge was connecting the designer and customer workflows so that virtual try-ons and reservations provide useful information rather than just engagement metrics.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of building a complete experience that goes beyond a traditional virtual fitting room.

Unmade allows designers to launch proposed collections, customers to visualize themselves wearing those designs, and designers to monitor demand before making production decisions.

We're especially proud of integrating YouCam's virtual try-on technology into a practical, demand-driven fashion workflow, rather than using it as a standalone feature.

What we learned

We learned that virtual try-on can offer value beyond helping customers shop for existing products.

When combined with meaningful customer actions, visual AI can help businesses understand demand earlier and make better-informed decisions.

We also learned the importance of keeping the experience simple while connecting two distinct user journeys into one cohesive platform.

What's next for Unmade

We plan to expand Unmade with real preorders, payment integrations, and production tracking.

We also want to help designers better understand demand through advanced analytics and eventually connect them with manufacturing partners.

Our long-term vision is to make fashion production more customer-driven, accessible to independent designers, and less dependent on speculative inventory.

Unmade — Try it before it exists.
