Background and context
Misinformation is a global pandemic as young adults become more reliant on social media as a platform for news. We found that 61% of misinformation was reportedly through Meta platforms, highlighting our focus on Instagram as a platform.
Instagram Charms — what it does
Our solution has three key features:
Learning resources
We use gamification to provide quiz-style resources for users to engage with the learning content. Users have the opportunity to earn rewards (covered in the next point) as well as access additional resources that can help them identify misinformation on social media.
Profile charms
To incentivise users to engage with the content, we have added profile cosmetics that users can earn as rewards for getting quiz questions correct. These are randomised with different rarities and people can collect and display their favourite charms.
Comment themes
Through our primary research, we discovered that 100% of the people we interviewed use comments to help them verify information they see on social media. As a result, we integrated comment themes to further help users identify differing opinions or comments regarding the validity of the content through a form of community moderation.
Our design process
Our design is created through a number of iterations. We started with a broad problem space about misinformation. We did secondary research to find more statistics about the topic and conducted interviews to our target users. From there, we reframed the problem space to tackle more specific challenges which is reflected in our HMW statement. Then, we created multiple ideas and prioritised them using the impact-effort matrix. After that, we move onto the design process which is designing the UI & prototype in Figma, making use of an Instagram UI kit to ensure our designs fit Instagram's brand.
