Inspiration
Human Augmentation
Advancements in prostheses and wearable technology has opened up a novice realm in augmenting human ability. Devices that allow monitoring and stimulating of the human body are at the scale of sitting on your palm. Under this condition, not only can you visualize physiological signals of your body in situ, but you can also attempt to take control of the unrecognized signal in situ.
What it does
The device that augments your ability to control heartbeat by utilizing EMS and sensory induction.
Visualizing your heartbeat
Sense the beat of your heart in the form of your finger tapping accordingly to the heart-rate. The artificial movement of your finger is achieved by the use of Electrical Muscle Stimulation(EMS).
Controlling your heartbeat
Tilting your hand will allow you to shift the rhythm of (1) vibration on your arm and (2) beeping sound which may or may not induce a shift in your actual heartbeat.
How I built it
UnlmitedHand x MAX32630FTHR
UnlimitedHand to output EMS and vibration and to acquire orientation of user's hand.
MAX32630FTHR to acquire heart-rate signal and to output auditory stimuli.
Challenges I ran into
Designing Interaction Exploring unconscious physiological signals that waits to be shed light on and designing a feedback loop to allow control over that signal.
Learning New Hardware Learning the architecture and control method of two entirely different hardware from scratch.
Establishing Serial Connection Understanding how serial communications are achieved and establishing connection between multiple micro-controllers.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Working Sketch Model
Hacking hardware to create a rough working model that conveys the sense of what the project is aiming for.
What I learned
Interfacing Hardware
Connecting multiple hardware with different specificity in order to achieve complex human computer interaction. Designing a prototype that doesn't exceed the scope of a hackathon.
What's next for UnlimitedPulse
Wearable Illusion
Enriching the perceptive experience of controlling your own heartbeat by making the device compact and wireless and by refining the refining the sensory stimuli. One possible direction in making the interaction intuitive is to map the action of controlling your heartbeat to adjusting a dial on a beat box.
