University Freelance Hub (UFH)

🌟 Inspiration

It started with a simple observation — every university campus is packed with talented students: designers, developers, writers, data analysts, and more. Yet most of them graduate without a single paid project on their portfolio.

The problem isn't skill. It's access.

Existing platforms like Upwork and Fiverr weren't designed with students in mind. There's no verification system, no academic context, no protection for first-time freelancers who don't yet know how to protect themselves from unpaid work or exploitative clients.

We saw a gap that needed to be filled — a platform built specifically for the university ecosystem. One where a student's credibility starts from day one, verified by their institution, protected by escrow, and matched to opportunities by AI.

That vision became University Freelance Hub.

⚙️ What We Built

UFH is a full-stack freelancing marketplace designed exclusively for university students. Here's what it does:

  • 🎓 University Email Verification — Every student profile is tied to a verified academic identity, creating a trust layer no general freelance platform offers
  • 💼 Job Marketplace — Clients post jobs with budgets, deadlines, and skill categories; students browse and apply
  • 🤖 AI Smart Matching — The platform automatically recommends the top freelancers for each job based on skills, ratings, and availability
  • 💰 Escrow Payment System — Client funds are held securely and only released when work is approved, protecting both parties
  • Ratings & Reviews — Every completed project builds a student's reputation from scratch
  • 💬 In-App Messaging — Direct communication between students and clients without leaving the platform
  • 📊 Dual Dashboards — Separate, purpose-built experiences for students and clients

🛠️ How We Built It

We built UFH using MeDo — Baidu's AI-powered no-code full-stack app builder — which allowed our small team to go from idea to live product in under 24 hours.

Our workflow looked like this:

$$\text{Idea} \rightarrow \text{Prompt Engineering} \rightarrow \text{MeDo Generation} \rightarrow \text{Iteration} \rightarrow \text{Live Deployment}$$

We carefully crafted structured natural language prompts that described every page, feature, and user flow in detail. MeDo handled the scaffolding of the frontend, backend logic, database structure, and authentication — letting us focus on product decisions rather than boilerplate code.

📚 What We Learned

  1. Prompt engineering is a product skill. The quality of what MeDo generated was directly proportional to how clearly and specifically we described the product. Vague prompts produced vague results.

  2. Constraints breed creativity. Building under a 24-hour deadline forced us to ruthlessly prioritize features and think in terms of the demo experience rather than the perfect product.

  3. The student economy is underserved. The more we researched, the more we realized how few platforms genuinely serve student freelancers — this isn't just a hackathon project, it's a real gap worth filling.

  4. Escrow + verification is a powerful combination. Most platforms have one or the other. Having both, specifically designed for an academic context, is genuinely differentiated.

🚧 Challenges We Faced

Time. Building a multi-role platform — with separate dashboards for students and clients, AI matching, and an escrow flow — in under 24 hours was intense. Every prompt had to count.

Feature scope. It was tempting to build everything from the blueprint. We had to make hard cuts and focus on the core demo flow: sign up → post job → AI match → propose → escrow → complete → review.

Communicating trust without history. For a platform where trust is the core value proposition, launching with zero users and zero reviews is a paradox. We solved this in the demo with pre-populated sample profiles and jobs to show what the experience feels like at scale.

🔭 What's Next

UFH doesn't end at this hackathon. The roadmap includes:

  • Formal university partnership integrations
  • Blockchain-based credential verification
  • An internship and campus recruitment portal
  • Expansion across various universities

"UFH is the freelance ecosystem connecting university talent to real-world clients — built for the millions of students who are skilled, ambitious, and ready to earn."
