Inspiration
With the theme being out of this world, we wanted to have a slight educational touch so people could better understand how stars fuse heavier elements as they grow and eventually supernova to spread their elements and make the planets that make up the solar system.
What it does
In our game, the player can buy stars and place them around the galaxy to eventually collect their elements through a supernova and use them to buy planets to populate the solar system. This is not a game where you win or lose, it is a laid back indie game where you construct your galaxy to look as you want it.
How I built it
We used the unity game engine and wrote all of our scripts in C#. We have drop zones for stars to be placed on and then planet options on each star to save up your elements for.
Challenges I ran into
We ran into challenges such as our click events on some of the planet locations triggering others. We also had many small debugging issues that took much longer than expected.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We are proud that we made a game that looks so aesthetically pleasing that it also has the power to inform players about the formation of everything in the solar system. We are proud of how much more we learned in Unity and how many challenges we overcame in the process.
What I learned
Two members in our group had never used Unity before, so it was definitely a learning curve for us to show them how to use C# in Unity and use the documentation to lead you to your solution. We definitely learned how to use the Unity documentation pages a lot more efficiently to solve problems.
What's next for UniverseCraft
Next, we would like plays to be able to expand their galaxy and have the elements in the game be all of the periodic tables. Once we do this we would like to give players options to buy more developed planets and see if they can get life to form.
