Inspiration
Global warming is one of the hottest (literally) topics nowadays. The aim of the project fits with the theme of saving the universe (as stated in the hackathon description), which is starting from our own planet. Developing an app that suggests users reduce their carbon footprints and contribute to this burning issue is our team's small initiative towards saving the universe! Hence our app UNIVERSE-ABLE!
What it does
The app takes user input into account and calculates their carbon footprint score. The users can fill in their details in terms of the house, food, electricity, transportation, and misc things that contribute to an individual's carbon emission. The app also allows users to compete with other users to see who's contributing more to a better Earth! This gamified approach should keep our users motivated to stay sustainable!
How we built it
The app is divided into two component :
The back-end
The back-end was made in python using the Django framework. Authentication is done with the help of Django as well. Simple endpoints were made to ensure communication between the client and the server. With SQLite DB, the users and the score were stored easily to ensure the working of the leaderboard.
The front-end
The front-end was made in Flutter. Making the app in flutter allowed us to be scalable. Right now, we have an android app of application that can be easily converted to a web or an iOS app.
Challenges we ran into
The most difficult challenge we faced was the integration of the front-end with the back-end. Sleepless nights were a key part of our solution. Since our team consists of beginner-intermediate developers, we struggled a bit, in the beginning, to set up the application. But throughout the time period of the hackathon, we tried our best to systematically approach the problems and find a suitable solution for them. This wasn't the case always, we also struggled to decide the frameworks to use and this cost us some valuable time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Since this was our first hackathon, coming up with an idea and collectively making that idea into reality just in a day or two was the biggest accomplishment that we're proud of! Solid teamwork and helping each other to learn new things were some of the things we would like to experience once again. Overall, we would like to say that this was a fun hackathon and this experience has had us pumped for more challenges like these.
What we learned
We learned about new technologies, frameworks, and integration techniques. Working in a team also gave the teammates an opportunity to observe how different mindsets approach the same solution. These 2 days were a rollercoaster ride!
What's next for UniverseAble
We have a lot of things in mind for the next version of UniverseAble, this was only a demo version. We planned to add a lot of functionalities but couldn't due to time constraints. Here are some of the functionalities that we considered :
- Making an empty space for different users to contribute their ideas in saving our Earth.
- Give accurate sustainable changes that a particular can follow to improve their score.
- A more detailed leaderboard, comparing countries/states in terms of sustainability.
- Deploy the app to our domain (from domain.com)
- Better control over profiles for the users
