Inspiration
We both got inspiration from ourselves to develop a game outside of lectures. We both would attend classes and only create the games we were asked to, but we decided to test our skills.
What it does
Our game is a simple vertical platformer; the player jumps from platform to platform in order to successfully reach the green platform at the top. There are many parts of the course, like moving platforms and platforms that drop every few seconds. We also coded the game so that a rerun of the game will produce a completely new parkour course to play in.
A and D/arrow keys - move the character Space - make the character jump
How we built it
We built it using Unity, a popular game engine used to make many of today's popular games.
Challenges we ran into
We struggled with being able to code the dropping platforms; there were times that the platforms would drop immediately after the game was started and sometimes the platforms wouldn't budge. It also took us a very long time to nail the instantiation part; this part helps randomize the platform blocks so that it makes a completely new platformer for each time you reload the game.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of stepping out of our comfort zone to create something entirely new without the use of a mentor.
What we learned
We have learned a lot from doing the work ourselves and experimenting with other concepts to make the game better. We also learned that two people creating a game is much better than a single person!
What's next for Unity Vertical Parkour Course
We will be adding a variety of powerups like a jump boost. We will also add more levels and use our instantiation knowledge to randomize the course too!
