Inspiration

Our team was inspired by the fact that it is very hard for many people to travel to different countries to learn about and exchange culture and ideas due to high poverty rate around the world.

What it does

The project that we created is titled Unity: Embracing Diversity. It is a social hub for people with diverse backgrounds around the world to learn about the customs and traditions of each other. You select the flag of what you represent and display it to other individuals. No matter where you are from, like the US or Japan, you can learn about new cultures from meeting new people. It also includes a bio that you can fill out so others can learn about you too. A cultural spotlight is included that swaps profiles every 2 minutes, showcasing the description that people create for themselves. In addition, there are multiple areas representing the culture of countries like Japan and Paris that you can tour. A museum containing miniature versions of things like iconic monuments is present in the hub where you can view them.

How we built it

We built Unity: Embracing Diversity in ROBLOX Studio. We utilized the Lua programming language and created 3D Models in our game. We also used Blender to create some of our models and imported them into ROBLOX Studio.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges we ran into was debugging scripts when something went wrong. For example, sometimes the flags didn't appear an avatar's head, but we were able to fix it so that it would hover above the avatar.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our team is proud of creating a cultural hub to swap customs and even hobbies around other people. With this, people around the world can meet each other and have meaningful interactions digitally.

What we learned

We learned how to work as a team to build our hub. We also became more knowledgeable in coding in Lua and 3D modeling in ROBLOX Studio.

What's next for Unity: Embracing Differences

We plan to continue to develop Unity: Embracing Differences with hopes to grow the community so more and more people can learn about each others traditions, customs, and culture.
