Inspiration
During the coronavirus pandemic, we were disheartened to see lots of families go through their day without essential items like food, toiletries, water, and so on. The most saddening thing was to see young children spend some days without food and hence, we wanted to build a platform to help people in need. Thus, United Pantry came into existence.
What it does
United Pantry is a simple web application that helps people in need of essential items like food find donors who are willing to donate such items. It is a forum where donors can connect with people in need in their area during this pandemic
How we built it
We built this application using Python as the backend, Bootstrap as the frontend, and Flask to integrate it together. We also used MongoDB for our database.
Challenges we ran into
Due to conflicting times, we were unable to work well as a team, but even then, all members tried to put in the effort to complete their tasks and hence were able to build this product. Also, we had our differences in the technologies we would use for this project, but we ended up agreeing on a common framework and made the effort to learn and develop our skills in those frameworks.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
We were happy to get the product up and running and are excited to see how we can help those in need.
What I learned
We learned new skills, the importance of managing our time and teamwork in a virtual setting. A good team does not need to meet up frequently, as long as they complete the tasks, keep strong communication with other members, and focus on the main goal, everything will fall into place.
What's next for United Pantry
Next, we want to build a mobile version of this application so that it is accessible everywhere to everyone.
