Inspiration
Educational and mental health resources are not distributed equally. Many students, particularly those in underserved communities, lack access to engaging STEM materials and practical mental health resources that can support their growth.
We founded United Minds Alliance (UMA) to help close that gap. Our mission is to empower youth through STEM education, mental health awareness, and community support by providing accessible educational toolkits and creating opportunities for students to learn, grow, and lead.
For this Growathon, our focus was not on building a new product—it was on learning how to grow an existing mission and expand our reach to more students, volunteers, and supporters.
What it does
United Minds Alliance distributes STEM and mental health toolkits to students in underserved communities. Each toolkit contains educational activities, learning materials, mental health resources, and other items designed to encourage curiosity, learning, and well-being.
Beyond toolkit distribution, UMA builds a network of student leaders who organize local initiatives, recruit volunteers, raise support, and expand access to educational resources within their communities.
To date, UMA has distributed hundreds of toolkits, raised thousands of dollars in support, and expanded through multiple community partnerships and chapter initiatives.
How we built it
UMA was built through community outreach, fundraising, volunteer recruitment, and educational programming. We developed toolkit distribution systems, established partnerships, and created opportunities for students to engage with STEM and mental health resources.
During the Growathon, we shifted our attention toward growth and visibility. We began posting more consistently on social media, developed a more structured content strategy, experimented with SEO and discoverability techniques, and analyzed how people interacted with our content online.
One of our biggest milestones during the challenge was creating and publishing our first reel-style content showcasing toolkit launches and community impact. This allowed us to present our mission in a more engaging format and reach audiences beyond our existing network.
We also focused on improving how we communicate our impact online by documenting events more consistently, sharing student success stories, and making our organization easier for new supporters to discover.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was balancing impact work with visibility. Running distributions, coordinating volunteers, and organizing events already required significant effort, and adding a consistent growth strategy created additional demands on our team.
Another challenge was learning how to translate real-world impact into digital content. We had meaningful stories and results, but we needed to learn how to package those stories into content that people would actually engage with and share.
Building consistency was also difficult. Growth requires repeated effort, and we learned that posting once is far less effective than creating a sustainable content pipeline.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of expanding our organization's digital presence and developing a more intentional growth strategy.
During the Growathon, we:
Increased content output and posting consistency Created our first reel-based promotional content Improved the way we document and communicate our impact Experimented with SEO and audience growth strategies Strengthened our ability to reach new supporters and volunteers
Most importantly, we gained a deeper understanding of how mission-driven organizations can use growth strategies to increase real-world impact.
What we learned
Through UMA and the Growathon, we learned that creating impact is only part of the challenge—people must also be able to discover that impact.
We learned how content strategy, SEO, social media consistency, audience engagement, and storytelling all contribute to organizational growth. We also learned that growth is not a single event but a system built through continuous experimentation and refinement.
Most importantly, we learned that visibility can amplify impact. The more effectively we communicate our mission, the more students we can ultimately serve.
What's next for United Minds Alliance
Our next goal is to continue expanding UMA's reach by increasing toolkit distributions, growing our chapter network, and developing stronger partnerships with schools, libraries, and community organizations.
We also plan to continue investing in content creation, short-form video, SEO, volunteer recruitment systems, and data-driven outreach strategies. By combining community impact with sustainable growth practices, we hope to scale our mission and empower even more students through STEM education and mental health awareness.
Ultimately, we want UMA to become a platform that not only serves communities directly but also inspires young people to create positive change within their own communities.
