Inspiration

Aarna and Anagha are two members on our team who take an engineering class at American High School! Recently, they've had trouble converting between different units in class, and we realize that it's extremely important to have one website where you do all your conversions!

What it does

Our CATBOT is a website where there is a cute cat to give you company and you can input any measurement (with abbreviated units too!) and convert it to a different unit.

How we built it

As it's our first time at a hackathon, we spent a majority of our time familiarizing ourself with new programming languages - Python and JavaScript. Then, we made our first iteration with a chatbot in python that asks you what units to convert and gives the correct answer. This was our method to test our logic in python. Then, we started working on the user interface using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Challenges we ran into

Our main challenge was that after we programmed the frontend and the backend separately, we did not know how to implement them together. To do this, we had to research and use new libraries and things like Flask.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our main accomplishment today is actually achieving accuracy in the answers that our website provides. We put a lot of time and effort into finding the best Python library for unit conversions. Since this is our group's first project ever, I think it is something we are extremely proud of.

What we learned

Today, we learned the importance of asking for help. Multiple times throughout our project, we found ourselves in situations in which we didn't know what to do. Rather than resorting to using AI and being dishonest with the work we submitted, we decided to ask those around us for help and ended up getting lots of insight!

What's next for Unit Converter

Right now, Unit Converter is just a website that can perform complex conversions. However, in the future, we aspire to make it even more amazing by implementing AI into our website to perform dimensional calculations and, most importantly, make the cat spin and interactive for a better user experience!
