Inspiration

Parking can be expensive, traffic around Vegas is frustrating, and ridesharing is still expensive and underpromoted. Meanwhile, hundreds of Vegas drivers especially students would drive to the same destinations every day, airports, apartment complexes, grocery stores, and campus events often with empty seats in their cars. Many of us would even drive to friend's house just to car pool so why not help drivers make a little extra income, riders save money, all while cities see less traffic and parking congestion. It’s ridesharing built around convenience, not full-time drivers.

What it does

Our platform connects university students already heading in the same direction, allowing riders to join trips that are already happening instead of paying full price for an Uber. Riders save money, drivers offset costs, and built-in social features, like friend discounts, make commuting more social while reducing traffic and emissions on and around campus.

How we built it

Our platform utilized NextJS for the Frontend and Backend. Utilizing Supabase for our database and authentication and authorization while having real time services like chatting. We use MapBox's API for navigation and logic for route optimization and using google maps to create and share the actual navigation.

Challenges we ran into

Coming up with the logics for database schemas was really difficult as we had to revert and even branch/create different schemas and logics. Ran into multitudes of bugs trying to implement real time messaging, best approach to calculate valid detours and optimization paths for users and many UI/UX implementations. Implementing our Backend routes to the Frontend also resulted in many logic errors.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're really proud to actually build a real time applications that actually works mostly to what we wanted. Coming up with best optimization route got tricky as well as figuring out how we can have all the functionality perform in real time for user to users.

What we learned

Many of us learned to utilize Supabase for auth integration as well as implementing real time updates. Understanding Row-level Security to ensure that users can only modify their own posts.

What's next for UNISHARE

Implement secure payment features and add more social features to the app. We want to add rating and trust features and of course more in depth user registration for security like validating driver licenses. We'd also want to expand this to a mobile app and improve matching with smarter batching and caching. We can also launch a closed beta at local campuses and schools for testing.
