Inspiration

Every year, millions of students face one of life’s most critical choices: which university to attend. Current tools are fragmented, biased, or overwhelming. Students struggle with comparing fees, admission requirements, rankings, and outcomes across multiple sources. Many end up making uninformed decisions, which can lead to debt, dropouts, and dissatisfaction.

We wanted to solve this by building a transparent, global, and student-first platform — a single lens into higher education choices. That’s how Uniscope was born.

What it does

Uniscope empowers students to make smarter academic choices by:

  • 🌍 Centralizing global university profiles
  • ⚖️ Offering side-by-side smart comparisons of programs, fees, ROI, and career outcomes
  • 👥 Building a community hub for authentic peer insights
  • 🤖 Providing a 24/7 AI-powered assistant for personalized guidance
  • 📊 Delivering data-driven insights into admissions and career trends

How we built it

  • Frontend: Next.js 15 + TypeScript + Tailwind CSS v4 + Shadcn/UI for a modern, responsive UI
  • Backend: Next.js API Routes with Prisma ORM and PostgreSQL for structured data management
  • AI Layer: OpenAI GPT-4 + Vercel AI SDK for conversational guidance and smart recommendations
  • Deployment: Vercel platform for edge-optimized performance and scalability

We followed an MVP-first approach — focusing on essential comparison and guidance features while keeping the architecture modular for future expansion.

Challenges we ran into

  • 🔄 Data normalization: University data varies a lot across sources — aligning it into a clean structure was tough.
  • ⚡ Performance optimization: Ensuring comparisons load instantly even with large datasets required database indexing and query tuning.
  • 🎨 Balancing UX with complexity: Designing an interface that’s powerful yet simple for students was a challenge.
  • ⏱️ Hackathon time constraint: Building both AI features and community components within a short timeline.
