Inspiration

In a world where people are more connected than ever yet increasingly divided, UniPaws was created to bring people closer rather than push them apart.

The inspiration came from a simple belief:

Learning about each other’s cultures, languages, and perspectives is the first step toward unity.

By combining AI, gamification, and an emotionally engaging virtual companion, this project turns cultural learning into a fun, meaningful daily habit.

What it does

UniPaws is an AI-powered, gamified learning platform designed to promote unity through education.

Users adopt a magical virtual companion that grows and evolves as they:

  • Complete daily study and focus sessions
  • Take AI-generated quizzes on global cultures, history, and languages
  • Learn through interactive challenges and themed content
  • Build consistency and streaks
  • Unlock new evolution stages for their companion

The more they learn, the more their companion evolves — turning personal growth into a visual and emotional journey.

How we built it

Tech Stack

UniPaws is a full-stack AI-integrated web application built using:

Frontend

  • React + TypeScript
  • Interactive UI with animations

Backend

  • Node.js + Express
  • Supabase for authentication, real-time database, and user profiles
  • Mistral AI for generating quizzes and study content
  • Wolfram Alpha API for mathematical explanations

Systems & Features

  • Gamification engine with XP, streaks, and evolution states
  • Clear separation of frontend and backend for scalability

Challenges we ran into

Some of the major challenges included:

  • Managing multiple AI APIs without conflicts
  • Handling real-time data sync between frontend and Supabase
  • Maintaining smooth performance while processing heavy AI workloads
  • Integrating multilingual & RTL (right-to-left) support
  • Debugging authentication and database permission issues

Each challenge required deep debugging, refactoring, and testing under time pressure.

What we learned

Through building UniPaws, we learned:

  • How to use and optimize real-time databases like Supabase
  • How to balance technical complexity with smooth user experience
  • How AI can be used not just for automation but for social impact

This project strengthened both our technical skills and our vision for using technology to build community.

What's next for UniPaws

Future plans include:

  • Global leaderboards and collaborative cultural challenges
  • Expanded content covering more cultures and global topics
  • Voice-based interaction with the virtual companion
  • Mobile apps for Android and iOS
  • Community-generated quizzes + multilingual expansions
