Navigating higher education applications is an overwhelming process. Every year, millions of students spend hundreds of hours digging through fragmented, confusing university portals just to find basic details like tuition fees, scholarship eligibility, document checklists, and strict submission deadlines. We noticed that existing platforms act as simple search engines, leaving students to manually organize and track everything themselves. We wanted to build a truly intelligent companion—one that doesn't just show data, but actively guides students from discovery to final submission.
What it does
UniPath AI simplifies the entire university and scholarship journey through three core capabilities:
- Smart Profile Matching: Matches students with suitable academic programs and funding options based on their unique academic profile, budget, and career goals.
- Unified Information Hub: Aggregates tuition costs, admission rules, and scholarship criteria into standardized, side-by-side comparison tables.
- Interactive Application Tracker: Breaks down complex application requirements into step-by-step document checklists and actionable deadline alerts.
How we built it
- Frontend: Built with React and Next.js, leveraging Tailwind CSS to ensure a clean, accessible interface across all devices.
- Backend: Node.js and Express powering an automated data ingestion pipeline and match-scoring engine.
- Database & Storage: PostgreSQL to handle structured university records, scholarship data, and user profile progress.
Challenges we ran into
One of our primary hurdles was standardizing unstructured data. University websites present tuition structures, international requirements, and deadlines in vastly different formats. Designing a unified database schema and robust data processing logic that could handle these inconsistencies without losing critical detail was a major technical focus.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Frictionless UX: Created an intuitive dashboard that reduces hours of scattered tab browsing into a clean, unified view.
- Personalized Scoring: Successfully implemented an algorithmic match score that accurately ranks opportunities based on a student's specific background.
- End-to-End Tracking: Built a seamless transition from discovering a program to tracking its individual application milestones.
What we learned
We gained deep insights into designing user-centric platforms for high-stress workflows. We learned how critical clear UX hierarchy and concise data presentation are when dealing with overwhelming amounts of official admissions information.
What's next for UniPath AI
- Automated Data Updates: Integrating automated web scraping and verification workflows to keep tuition, requirement, and deadline data continuously updated.
- AI Personal Essay Advisor: Adding an AI assistant to help students brainstorm, outline, and refine their personal statements and scholarship essays.
- Direct Portal Sync: Partnering with institutions to allow direct document submissions directly through the UniPath workspace.
