Studying abroad is a complex, confusing, and often overwhelming process for high school graduates. Every country has different university admission requirements, visa processes, and cultural nuances that students must navigate. This diversity creates barriers for students who don’t have reliable guidance. The best way to simplify this journey is connecting students with mentors who have successfully gone through the exact same process. Their first-hand experience cuts through the complexity and helps students avoid costly mistakes and delays.

UniPals was created to solve this. We empower students to get real advice from real people who’ve successfully walked the path—while also giving mentors and agencies a structured space to collaborate transparently, all under a system built on trust and accountability.

What it does

Unipals is a platform designed to streamline the study abroad journey by connecting students with verified mentors, trusted local and international education agencies, and university representatives. It offers a collaborative case management system where students can track their entire application process, upload documents, schedule consultations, and receive personalized guidance. By acting as a trusted middleman with secure payments and milestone tracking, Unipals ensures transparency and accountability between all parties involved.

How we built it

We built Unipals using modern web technologies focused on scalability and user experience. The MVP supports multiple languages (English, Russian, Spanish) and integrates with popular video conferencing tools like Zoom and Google Meet for seamless communication. Our backend securely manages escrow payments, user verification, and real-time notifications to keep all parties informed. The system is modular, allowing us to rapidly iterate and add new features like AI-powered document assistance and expanded agency partnerships.

Challenges we ran into

Verifying mentors and agencies while maintaining a smooth user onboarding flow. Balancing security and privacy with the need for transparency and trust. Designing an intuitive case management system that supports long, multi-step processes. Building multi-language support and handling currency/payment complexities. Ensuring reliable integration with external tools (Zoom, payment gateways).

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Defining a clear escrow-based revenue model that aligns incentives and builds trust. Designing a unique “case” workflow that tracks entire student application journeys end-to-end. Creating a robust user roles system supporting mentors, agencies, students, and university reps. Establishing multilingual support from the start to serve diverse global markets.

What we learned

The study abroad journey is highly nuanced and requires personalized, flexible support. Users prefer freedom in choosing mentors rather than algorithmic ranking systems. Transparent communication and real-time updates reduce friction and build trust. External integrations (Zoom, payment processors) must be robust and seamless to avoid user frustration. Verification and trust-building are key pillars for long-term platform success.

What's next for UniPals

Launch MVP in target markets and onboard initial mentors, agencies, and students. Develop mobile apps to enhance accessibility and engagement. Implement AI-powered document review and checklist automation. Expand agency partnerships and introduce premium subscription plans. Integrate university direct admissions representatives for seamless acceptance. Build community features for peer support and knowledge sharing.
