Inspiration

More than 60% of high school students feel unprepared for university & college readiness is directly correlated to socioeconomic status

How can we help college freshmen who may not have the necessary support navigate the challenges of making informed decisions for their future in a fun, simple way?

What it does

Our solution is an interactive choose-your-own adventure game offering practical insights on time management, budgeting, and self-care.

Emphasizing the importance of building connections, we prepare students for major decision-making milestones in their college journey.

How we built it

  • designed an ENTIRE choose-your-own adventure framework (that when calculated, has 100+ unique combinations of events)
  • used javascript + json to handle the different options & interactions like turning the page
  • planned our prototype & styles with figma
  • painstakingly styled with CSS

Challenges we ran into

  • Creating an engaging story flow that covered all the concepts we wanted to cover, like budgets & loans, academics, student clubs and research, AND also felt nice and was entertaining enough to play
  • Navigating time zones ;(
  • Figuring out how to configure the json file ;(

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Creating a fully functional web app!
  • Learning new skills (3/4 are beginner hackers!!)
  • Having fun :)))

What we learned

  • That bursaries in Canada is called need-based financial aid in America
  • Games are fun but very hard

What's next for UniNav

  • Integrating with actual university platforms, so the game can be tailor-made by school
  • Talking more about the hard things, like loans and how to succeed after university, the stuff that is hard to access if you are a first-generation student
  • Add more fun interactions!
