Inspiration

The inspiration for UniNav comes from the frustration many students face when navigating the complex and time-consuming university admission process. With a multitude of university websites to browse through, students often struggle to find relevant information about admission criteria, programs offered, scholarships, and deadlines. There is a lack of a centralized, accessible platform to guide students through these processes, leaving them overwhelmed and uncertain. UniNav was born out of the need to simplify and streamline this experience by providing personalized, real-time guidance in a single platform.

What it does

UniNav is an AI-powered platform designed to guide students through the university admission process with ease. By leveraging advanced AI and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) technology, UniNav consolidates admission criteria, available programs, scholarships, and deadlines from multiple universities into a single platform. Students can interact with the platform via an intuitive chatbot interface, receiving personalized recommendations based on their academic profile and preferences. UniNav aims to eliminate the need for students to visit multiple university websites, offering a streamlined, user-friendly experience.

How it works

UniNav uses cutting-edge technologies to provide an efficient solution to the problem:

• AI-Powered Chatbot: Powered by OpenAI’s GPT-3, UniNav’s chatbot provides personalized responses and recommendations based on the student’s input.
• RAG Technology: The platform uses Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to fetch up-to-date information from university PDFs and other sources, ensuring students get the most accurate and relevant data.
• Vector Search: Pinecone is used to enable advanced search capabilities, allowing the platform to retrieve specific, relevant information from vast amounts of unstructured data.
• Streamlit: The user interface is built using Streamlit, making it intuitive and responsive for students to interact with the platform.

Challenges

Developing a platform like UniNav comes with its challenges. Gathering and organizing data from multiple university websites and different formats (like PDFs) proved difficult, as each university has its own structure for presenting admission information. Ensuring the AI is able to accurately interpret and provide relevant responses also required fine-tuning. Additionally, creating an interface that is simple, user-friendly, and non-overwhelming for students was a delicate balance to strike.

What’s next

The future of UniNav includes expanding the platform to include more universities, adding multilingual support for global accessibility, and integrating additional features like application tracking and automated CV building. A mobile app version of the platform will make it even more accessible. UniNav will continue to evolve, providing an all-encompassing tool for students navigating their educational journey.
