Inspiration
We were following tons of instagram pages just to stay up-to-date on the events we're interested in. We wanted a single platform to check and find live events focused around our interests.
What it does
So we created UniMeet. UniMeet is a hub for event planning that makes it easy to find interesting things to do on campus and get involved! You can search for events with our mapping integration or browse with filters based on your availability, location and interests. Then, you can track what events you registered for to stay on top of your plans.
Finally, you can create student-hosted events of your own! We're aiming for users to create events for casual meetups, like a pickup game of basketball, and clubs to verify their status with AMS and add their listings as official events.
How we built it
We started from UI designs in figma and built out from there to finally include a full frontend in React and backend with authentication and relational databases. We learned to integrate the google maps api, maptiler and mapbox gl allowing users to filter and search their preferred locations granularly.
Challenges we ran into
We struggled to decide on a set of features that would be intuitive for first time users but allow people to match events to their specific interests no matter how niche.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that our product allows users to track and manage many events all in one place with a single login from multiple platforms. This makes it so it could actually be used on the go with people looking for events in real time.
What we learned
We learned to focus heavily on the user experience, with UI drafts first and then build backwards towards a backend and integrations that make it come to life. On the technical side we also learned to manage authentication with user sign-ins, focusing on a secure but fast way to identify users.
What's next for UniMeet
We plan to integrate with the UBC AMS Nest, allowing clubs to verify themselves with the platform and promote their events on UniMeet. This would make it easy to distinguish between AMS sponsored clubs and casual group meetings as well as allowing users to filter for which they prefer.
