Inspiration
First-generation college students' major issue is the lack of guidance. Even though first-gen college students are as determined and hard-working as possible, everyone needs someone who can tell them which way to go when they reach a dead-end.
What it does
UniHelp connects rising first-gen college students to students at college to help them in their journey. It consists of a one-on-one session with a college student and a public forum where the students can ask and answer. This way, whatever challenges they encounter, they'll have someone on their shoulder who'll say, "Hey! I was in the same place one day, you're not alone in this." It'll also help students with their social skills, personality development, and many other great qualities needed for the 21st century.
Challenges I ran into
Of course, nothing can be accomplished without running into a few challenges. For me, the main challenge was crafting the idea. I needed the idea to be unique. I had to think of an idea, an idea the hundreds of students in this hackathon wouldn't think of and when I was struggling with my college applications, UniHelp intrigued my curiosity. When that was sorted out, I realized that I was still a beginner in learning how to code the back-end part of the website. Lots of surfing and tutorials later, I was a little confident I could do it.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I've now created a website that I can call my own. I've successfully participated in my first hackathon. Even though I didn't have hopes for myself at the start of this, I'm now confident that majoring in computer science is good for me. I'm so so proud of myself for making out of this hackathon without bursting my head or my computer :)
What we learned
All of the workshops that were conducted were very very informative. I got a chance to learn about the various aspects that go into this. I also got an opportunity to learn the back-end part of the code successfully.
What's next for UniHelp
I will continue to make the website more accessible and interactive. The steps towards smooth interaction are being taken. I want a guarantee my users a great experience while using UniHelp.
I might also add a scholarship portal for students to browse various scholarships and have as much financial assistance as possible.
I've also decided to contact other college students in other countries, such as the UK, Canada, Australia, etc. expanding the student base. My only vision is for students like myself to have someone to look up to when they run into a problem.
