As avid Spotify users, we feel that the recommender system which exists on the Spotify platform generally does not meet our needs as users of the app. The recommended music provided by Spotify is oftentimes music we have listened to, or songs and artists that are widely known/popular. We, personally, seek that the music which is recommended to us is completely new: music we have not interacted with, and music that may be of genres, styles, and artists that heavily differ from what we usually listen to. Upon discussing with our peers, we have found that this is an issue many Spotify users and music lovers feel strongly about. We aim to change that. Not only would we like to develop a recommender system that is far more suited to the needs of many Spotify users, but we would like to bring the music community together in doing so.
