Inspiration
The project was inspired by the critical gaps in healthcare access in rural African communities, especially in our country, Malawi, particularly for pregnant women, elderly patients, and chronic disease sufferers. Limited access to clinics, diagnostics and emergency care motivated the creation of a unified platform integrating AI, IoT and mobile technologies to improve monitoring and response. According to WHO (2023), nearly 80% of sub-Saharan Africa faces a shortage of healthcare specialists, and UNICEF (2022) reports that only 44% of Malawian households have access to a clinic within 5 km, highlighting the urgent need for innovative healthcare solutions such as this.
What It Does
HealthBridge AI is a unified smart community health platform that:
- Monitors patient vitals in real-time via IoT devices
- Geo-Location & Distance Calculation: Redirect patient to nearest active hospital.
- Analyzes medical images like X-rays and ultrasound using AI
- Sends medication reminders and tracks adherence
- Provides AI-assisted symptom checking and risk prediction
- Generates emergency alerts and redirects patients to the nearest active clinics
- Supports doctors and clinics with clinical decision support insights
How We Built It
- System Architecture: Modular architecture separating IoT data collection, AI analytics, backend APIs, and frontend dashboards
- IoT Integration: Wearable and home-based sensors for heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, oxygen level, and optional glucose monitoring
- AI Engine: CNNs for X-ray analysis, LSTMs for time-series vitals prediction, and classification models for risk assessment
- Backend Development: Node.js + Express APIs handling sensor data, FastAPI(ML) for AI predictions, USSD for feature phones, and emergency routing logic
- Frontend Development: Responsive dashboards and mobile-friendly apps using Next.js and TailwindCSS
- Emergency Handling: GPS-based redirection algorithm integrated with SMS and app notifications for clinics, patients, and caregivers.
Challenges We Ran Into
- Real time processing of IoT data and timely alerts
- AI model training with limited and imbalanced medical datasets
- Designing an emergency routing algorithm factoring distance, clinic capacity and service suitability
- Integrating multiple modules (IoT, AI, database, frontend) seamlessly
- Ensuring accessibility and usability for users with varying digital literacy levels
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
- Successfully implemented real-time vitals monitoring and emergency alerts
- Built AI models capable of analyzing X-ray and ultrasound images with practical accuracy
- Developed an emergency redirection system to nearest active clinics
- Integrated multiple technologies (IoT, AI, mobile/web) into a cohesive platform
- Positioned the system as a Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) for safe, doctor-assisted deployment
What We Learned
- Hands-on experience with IoT, AI and full stack development
- Importance of healthcare ethics, patient privacy, and data security
- Algorithm design for predictive analytics and routing
- User experience design for low-resource and rural settings
- Team collaboration and problem-solving in a complex, interdisciplinary project
What's Next for Unified Smart Community Health Platform
- Expand AI models with more diverse and larger datasets
- Integrate telemedicine features for remote consultations
- Add ambulance dispatch and traffic-aware routing for emergencies
- Deploy and test in rural healthcare facilities for real-world evaluation
- Scale the system across multiple regions with multilingual and culturally adapted interfaces
