Inspiration
The scholarship application process is notoriously chaotic. As a student aiming for high academic goals, I found myself juggling multiple Excel sheets, browser tabs, and calendar reminders to keep track of various university deadlines, essay requirements, and portal login credentials. I realized that the "tracking" part of the process was becoming as stressful as the applications themselves. I built UniElytra to centralize this process and regain control over my academic future.
What it does
UniElytra is a web-based dashboard designed to streamline scholarship management. It allows users to:
Centralize Data: Store all scholarship opportunities in one database.
Track Progress: Monitor application status (Not Started, In Progress, Submitted, Rejected/Accepted) in real-time.
Deadline Management: Keep a clear view of upcoming deadlines to ensure no opportunity is missed.
Requirement Tracking: Manage specific document requirements for each application.
How we built it
I chose a robust, data-driven approach for this project:
Backend: Developed using Python to handle the application logic and data processing.
Database: Structured with SQL to ensure reliable storage and efficient querying of scholarship data.
Frontend/UI: Applied my UX/UI certification principles to ensure the interface is clean, intuitive, and reduces cognitive load for the user.
Deployment: Successfully deployed the application to a cloud hosting platform, making it accessible from any device.
Challenges we ran into
Database Schema: Designing a schema that was flexible enough to handle different types of scholarships (merit-based, need-based, research grants) while keeping queries simple was the first hurdle.
Deployment: Moving the application from a local environment to a live server presented configuration challenges, especially regarding environment variables and database connectivity.
User Experience: Balancing the amount of information displayed on the dashboard without overwhelming the user required multiple design iterations.
Accomplishments that we're proud of Real-world Utility: Building a tool that I personally use to manage my own university applications.
End-to-End Development: Successfully taking the project from a raw concept to a fully deployed web application.
Data Integrity: Implementing a clean SQL structure that allows for easy searching and sorting of applications.
What we learned
This project was a deep dive into the full software development lifecycle. I learned how to manage backend-to-frontend communication, the importance of database normalization, and—most importantly—the discipline required to debug and maintain a deployed application. It bridged the gap between theory and actual practice.
What's next for UniElytra
Automated Notifications: Integrating email/SMS alerts to remind users of approaching deadlines.
AI Integration: Adding an AI feature to parse scholarship descriptions and automatically extract/suggest requirements.
Multi-User Authentication: Expanding the platform to allow other students to track their applications, complete with private user profiles.
