Inspiration

Walking through the town of Thigio,a rural town on the outskirts of Nairobi, it was evident that the ease and access of quality health care, pharmaceuticals and simple health education was in deed a concern to the individuals residing in this beautiful region. We wanted to help the public access cheap, efficient and quality health care and education at the convenience of not having to travel to a health care professional unless there is an absolute emergency..

What it does

We create easy access of information, health care and a mobile pharmacy to individuals at their homestead, by creating a personalized health record, patient portal and doctor's portal for the individual by a trained community health worker (that is known by the community).

How I built it

well, the app runs on the web and mobile phone. The web version's frontend is built using(html5,css3,javascript,jquery) while the back end end is built using (node.js)

Challenges I ran into

Initially the technical challenges were about maintaining the patient's integrity and how to encourage doctors to use our application. Ensuring doctors and patients don't modify sections they aren't supposed to. Coding to the specified requirements of the health care professional advising the coding team.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Creating not only an application that creates a personalised code, but an ease in access of shared information using the portals between the doctor and the patient as well being able to create a virtual mobile pharmacy. Impacting positively the life (health wise) of the poor, low income man.

What I learned

Health care requires a multitude of variables that are difficult to categorize under a particular code, therefore allowing us to consider a variety of artistic methods to code to perfection, the intricacies into putting detail into each requirement for each specific detail about the patient into their profiles was immensely crucial in order to allow ease for the patient to be able to get the correct diagnosis, and most importantly correct treatment.

What's next for Unicum Health

Hopefully taking it to a more global scale, being able to explore our app and portals in different countries, allowing the ease of patients to travel anywhere and not have to carry anything but a sticker of their personalized code.
