Inspiration

Inspired by various works to fill the digital divide in Africa while leveraging technology like Digital Umuganda, we have seen the advantages of e-learning mainly during the COVID-19 pandemic. So, by leveraging the open-sourced platform, we can't wait to witness the power of technology in solving our challenges. We dream of Rwanda and Africa in general, where everyone is involved in education, no matter their background or internet access, and education is the foundational stone for all development we want to see in the future.

What it does

Our solution is 3 in 1, where we develop a chatbot that will assist the students in learning mainly by question and answering and then support auto quiz generation powered by LLM; we aim to connect to USSD so that there is no need for internet access to test someone's knowledge.

How we built it

We used different frameworks;

  • For chatbot: we used Gradio to deliver a cool User Interface, powered by Groq as AI inferences, so we don't commit runtime errors while running LLM and HuggingFace to host the Gradio space.
  • For USSD: we used Flask

Challenges we ran into

We meet challenges like a lack of datasets, mainly when it comes to our local languages, and we can forget to mention the time.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We accomplished a chatbot that will serve in the plugin, plus the logic behind Autoquizzer USSD.

What we learned

We learned that we, as Africans, have the power and skills to transform our grand challenges into opportunities to leverage for sustainable development.

What's next for Unica

Delivering plugins for Chatbot and Autoquizzer USSD and working relentlessly to transform Education in Africa.
