Inspiration

My grandmother once told me over the phone to never go back to places that hurt me. Those words stayed with me. The inspiration for the lyrics came from that advice — I wrote the song about a young woman who leaves her hometown, a place that’s become too toxic and familiar (“familiarity breeds contempt”), to explore new zip codes, new experiences, and the freedom to grow beyond her past.

What It Does

The music fuses Afro-beats with pop, blending the warmth and rhythm of African percussion with the glossy hooks of contemporary pop. The visuals mirror the beat and message — colorful, expressive, and full of forward motion, symbolizing leaving behind pain and embracing transformation.

How We Built It

The project was created using OpenArt’s one-click music video feature, allowing the initial visual story to unfold seamlessly with the rhythm. Post-production and fine-tuning were done in CapCut, where color grading, timing, and transitions were refined to bring emotional depth and visual cohesion.

Challenges We Ran Into

Balancing the emotional weight of the story with the upbeat nature of Afro-pop was a challenge. We wanted to keep the video energetic and hopeful without losing the emotional sincerity of the narrative. Finding that balance between grief, growth, and groove took careful editing and sound design.

Accomplishments That We’re Proud Of

We’re proud of how the final video captures both personal healing and cultural vibrancy. It honors my grandmother’s words through art — transforming pain into rhythm, and memory into motion. The response from early viewers has been overwhelmingly positive, with many resonating deeply with its message of self-liberation and rebirth.

What We Learned

We learned that Afro-pop can be more than a genre — it can be a vehicle for storytelling and emotional truth. We also discovered the power of blending AI-assisted creativity with personal narrative to craft something deeply human and visually stunning.

What’s Next for UNFOLD (Afro-Pop Music Video)

Next, we plan to expand UNFOLD into a short film and a live performance experience that merges music, dance, and storytelling. The goal is to continue exploring themes of identity, place, and healing — inspiring others to leave behind what hurts them and unfold into who they’re meant to become.
