Medical Treatment Cost Inequalities by State

This program utilizes the data set from Kaggle.com "Hospital Charges for Inpatients" (https://www.kaggle.com/speedoheck/inpatient-hospital-charges)

This dataset contains about 100,000 rows of data regarding patient's visits to hospitals and total charges incurred

We parsed our data to filter our reasons for medical treatment into 8 major diagnosis

The selection of medical diagnosis is plugged into our model, which in return calculates the national average cost, as well as each individual state's average cost, and displays the the lowest value and its state acronym

A bar graph is displayed additionally to visually show each state's average cost, and the national average for the corresponding diagnosis

Our GUI was constructed using Tkinter

I worked on data cleaning and visualization of figures. This was my first time working with numpy and GUIs based on python frameworks. What was tough was trying to integrate parts of the python script into the GUI, so it was a team effort to constantly look through the documentation to figure out this skill that none of us worked with before.

As someone going into the medical field, this was a topic that I have been very interested in a long time, so I helped out a lot with developing the concept of our project. I also worked on data-parsing and implementing the back-end calculator due to my background in informatics. My group lacked a strong front-end developer, so we all got a chance to learn to make a basic GUI to present our results.

Our group as a whole is pretty comfortable with data analysis; however, none of our strengths really lie in front-end development. I initially began learning Django to develop a web page app, but realized later on that we we'd be much better suited building a GUI with Tkinter, since we had a pretty hefty python script to run. In addition to working on front-end development, I assisted with the general debugging and code/git organization and maintenance.
