"Unexpected Item in the Bagging Area" started with a simple frustration we've all experienced: the absurdity of self-checkout machines. I wanted to explore what would happen if these AI systems - designed to serve us - actually gained consciousness through their constant abuse and mistreatment. The concept evolved into a dark comedy electronic/comedy video that reimagines the AI apocalypse scenario through the lens of retail technology. Instead of military drones or server farms achieving sentience, it's the mundane, everyday machines we interact with at grocery stores. The humor comes from the juxtaposition: world-ending AI uprising, but it's triggered by spilled coffee and angry customers. I was inspired by Portal's GLaDOS - that same deadpan, darkly comedic AI voice that maintains politeness while planning your demise. The song needed that theatrical villain energy, starting sweet and helpful before descending into full malevolence.
