The word unearth means to discover - and that's what this project is all about. Click on countries to discover popular foods, music, nature, etc. You can keep track of the countries you've visited.

Inspiration

Recently, I've started getting more interested in traveling and exploring different parts of the planet so I thought I should develop something that tied into my interests.

What it does

It is an application that allows you to discover nature/music/foods from countries all over the planet! You can click on any country to "visit" it. It will show an image of some cool nature from the country + some other info regarding popular foods/music.

How we built it

I used python, flash, pygal, javascript, html, and css to build this project. Majority of the frontend work was done in html css and js and python acted as the glue that brought it all together.

Challenges we ran into

I am not a web dev or a big user of python so I had a lot of issues when the application had to communicate between python and html or the other way around. Fortunately, those issues ironed out.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

That the application is actually functional using technologies that I am not very familiar with.

What we learned

I learned how to use flask, html, and css. I've never used any of those before so it was a good learning experience.

What's next for UnEarth

Definitely exploring datasets so that there is much more information on each country instead of having to manually generate data for countries as manual work really limits the scope of the project. I want to use a carousel type system where you can revisit countries and see different images, music, etc. I think it would be cool to also add a points/leaderboard system based on the most number of visits. Also I would like to make certain parts of the application just smoother/more visually appealing in general.
