🧮 UncertaintyCalc.com – A Simple Tool for Complex Calculations
🚀 Inspiration
With over 40 years of experience in temperature metrology, I’ve created and reviewed hundreds of uncertainty budgets — but I've also seen how difficult they can be for newcomers and even experienced professionals. Most tools are either locked into complex spreadsheets or overly technical software.
I wanted to create something better:
An intuitive, accessible tool that makes uncertainty budgets easy to build, understand, and share.
And I wanted to prove that it could be done without needing to be a professional developer.
🛠️ How I Built It
Here’s the surprising thing: I’m not a coder. I come from a technical background — but not in software development.
Thanks to Bolt.new, I was able to implement what I knew from decades of experience and turn it into a working web app. I was — and still am — genuinely in awe of how quickly I could bring this idea to life. It’s no exaggeration to say:
I built the tool I always wanted — without writing code.
Tech Highlights
- Frontend/UI: Bolt.new (no-code at all by me)
- Data Storage: Started with browser localStorage, moved to Supabase for cloud sync
- Payments: Integrated Stripe for subscriptions with minimal friction
- Excel Integration: Import/export
- Revision History: Built-in version tracking — surprisingly easy
💡 What I Learned
- You don't have to be a developer to create useful tools — just someone with a clear problem and the willingness to explore.
- Bolt unlocks creativity for people like me.
- Some of the hardest-sounding tasks, like revision control, were surprisingly easy.
- Meanwhile, what I assumed would be easy — like printing the results — was really tricky
⚠️ Challenges
- Balancing clarity with depth — I had to make it usable for beginners, yet powerful for experts.
- The cloud transition — I was anxious about going from a local-only tool to full cloud sync, integrating login, subscriptions, and payments. But again, Bolt and Supabase made it far easier than I feared.
🎯 What’s Next?
- Multi-user collaboration and sharing
- Better PDF export for audit-ready reports
- Role-based templates for different measurement domains
- Community feedback to shape future updates
🙏 Final Thoughts
UncertaintyCalc.com has been more than a project — it’s been a passion. I took my experience and, using modern Bolt.new, created something real, functional, and helpful.
If this app makes uncertainty budgeting less intimidating and more transparent, especially for the next generation of engineers and calibration technicians— then I’ve achieved my goal.
