Inspiration

Have you ever been unable to connect with someone who saw the world completely differently? So often we find ourselves seeking out sources that support the points of view we already have, sheltering us from the real world. In an increasingly polarized political climate, this confirmation bias is pulling our nation apart. Introducing unBIASED, the ultimate tool to breaking that barrier and help you understand other people's points of view.

What it does

unBIASED provides users with a constantly accessible tool to find articles from opposite points of view. Integrating directly onto every website, this Chrome extension prompts users to search about any topic, returning an article from each end of the political spectrum; specifically, the left, right, and neutral points of view. In addition, our unBIASED web server integrates with Zoho Cliq to similarly provide users with easy access to new points of view. This is done by downloading a bot and entering keywords.

How we built it

The Chrome extension is built with javascript, html, CSS and node.js, and the server is hosted on AWS.

Challenges we ran into

Some of the more technically challenging parts were configuring the Chrome extension to properly integrate with every site. We also had no experience hosting web servers, and learning AWS had a steep learning curve.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have a functional prototype that has a solid foundation which we can build upon!

What we learned

We learned how to host on AWS, make a chrome extension, and use Zoho Cliq's developer tools.

What's next for unBIASED

The unBIASED team plans to add a cleaner user interface that allows for more features. This involves a visually appealing evaluation of every site, and warnings if the website is known to be biased. Sentiment analysis and natural language processing are also on our roadmap for the future.
