Inspiration
Being long time residents of Ontario and patients of its healthcare system, we've learned that there are many moving parts in the healthcare system that don't work well together. Many health care practitioners that need to communicate together use different systems with different languages and while there are patchwork solutions such as PrescriptIT to help, it's not enough.
What it does
This is why we created UnaCare. UnaCare is a centralized Electronic Health Record (EHR) platform that interdisciplinary professions to work with secure, accessible and unified data. This platform allows for health care practitioners to communicate with one and access patient records efficiently and easily, meaning more eyes on the table making reliable healthcare for patients. Any HCP on the platform is able to make entries and view the past entry history of patients and past prescriptions so pharmacist, physicians and other HCPs can provide better quality care for each patient. Because data is centralized, patients can also access the platform to view their prescriptions right from their personal devices and expanded features such as prescription refill reminders and appointment management.
How we built it
We designed the application using Figma and with prototype interactions, there is now a control flow for you to visualize the application yourself. In addition, we used SQLite3, Express.js, React, Node.js to build the technical prototype (which can be found on the github link below). React serves as a lightweight server side rendering library allowing for responsive user experiences and with WCAG compliance to UI standards, the refreshed look of the curved dividers make the app looks and feels modern and easy on the eyes.
Challenges we ran into
This was the first time Amira has entered the world of UI design so learning Figma and how to organize elements, use the CSS box model and so on was challenging at first, yet very fun. It was the first time both of us used SQL so it was a challenge learning and implementing it to the backend, but served to be a very insightful experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of creating this idea! It's something that's very personal to both of us and seeing a possible solution come to the tangible world. And best of all we learned a lot of cool things while having fun! Building a functional full-stack application was certainly an accomplishment in record time.
What we learned
We learned a lot of things! Amira learned the world of UI design and can bring her Figma skills to develop more innovative and thorough solutions in the future. She also learned how the web works and the intuition behind relational databases and SQL. Saqif learned many things about the healthcare and how it works. He also learned on a more technical level how SQL works and integrates with servers and works with the entire stack. In addition, he gained more insight on the drawbacks of REST api and the potential advantages GraphQL has over it.
What's next for UnaCare
The slideshow expresses how we thought UnaCare can start from design and end up as a product. There are many factors to consider such as refactoring the design to incorporate many different kinds of requirements different HCPs need. In addition, as our dream is to unify data, we need to get rid of the barriers that make it difficult to switch platforms and therefore considering investing time and research into making data migration seamless and efficient with existing systems will be vital to the success of our ambitions.
