Inspiration
As fellow hackathon members who've spent hours coding on a project, we all have pretty bad posture; with many of us having back pain. In some cases, some unlucky fellows have a hard time even standing up straight since they're so used to bending their backs. This project was built in an attempt to solve this problem and help promote spinal wellness.
What it does
This project uses the laptop's camera to gauge the distance and angles of the user's shoulders to their mouth to determine whether or not if the user is slouching (found by comparing current position to the calibrated position). When the user isn't slouching, the led light will turn green but when the user is slouching, the light will turn yellow. If the user slouches long enough for a jumpscare to occur, then the led light will turn red and the buzzer will beep. When the jumpscare occurs, the AI voice over will roast the user so that it would encourage the user to improve their posture. The voice first starts off human but then progressively becomes higher pitched with more bubbly sounds in the background as the user's shrimp score increases.
How we built it
We connected the rgb led lights to the breadboard which is then connected alongside the buzzer to the arduino uno. The arduino is then connected via an usb port to the laptop. We collaborated with AI to build the program that could provide a leaderboard with the scores being used as data for the hardware components. We used ElevenLabs's AI voice library to give the AI a voice to use and change over time. We also drew pixel art for the UI and manually drew the frames of the shrimp pngs to animate it.
Challenges we ran into
We wanted to use a webcam on top of a servo that's connected to the arduino at first so we could have the servo move the webcam around to check on the user's posture. However, we couldn't get any servos so we had to improvise a way that would still connect our program to hardware while making it interesting. Therefore, we had to continuously change our project plans until we decided on using rgb led lights and a buzzer.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of being able to stay dedicated to completing this project even when our plans kept changing and we didn't know how to start. Despite that, we all still managed to work together, collaborate meet up times and assort tasks properly to each member of the group to finish this project.
What we learned
We learned that we should never give up even when times seem bleak and to always count on our teammates and mentors. Additionally, you shouldn't be afraid to ask for help when you need it because there will always be people willing to lend a helping hand.
What's next for Un-Shrimp
We'll work to make our program connect to live servers so that everyone would be able to use it and as a result, allow for a live leaderboard to make things more interactive and fun for everyone while continuing to improve wellness.
