Inspiration

Umuco Core was inspired by the urgent need to preserve Rwanda’s rich cultural heritage in a rapidly modernizing world. Many traditions, oral histories, and cultural practices risk being lost due to limited documentation. We envisioned a platform that uses technology, AI, and multilingual access to safeguard and share this heritage with both local and global audiences.

What it does

Umuco Core is an AI-powered, multilingual digital platform that preserves and showcases Rwanda’s cultural heritage. It allows users to explore oral traditions, music, artifacts, and historical narratives through an interactive and accessible interface. The platform supports Kinyarwanda, English, and French, making it inclusive and globally relevant.

How we built it

We built Umuco Core using a modern full-stack architecture. The backend is powered by Node.js and Express with PostgreSQL for data management, while the frontend uses React and Tailwind CSS for a responsive user experience. AI features enhance content discovery and interaction, and multilingual support ensures accessibility. The system is deployed using Render and Vercel.

Challenges we ran into

We faced challenges integrating AI efficiently, managing multilingual content, and ensuring cultural accuracy. Handling large media files like audio also required optimization for performance and accessibility, especially in low-bandwidth environments. Deployment issues such as CORS, environment variables, and database connections also required careful debugging.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We successfully built and deployed a full-stack AI-powered platform with multilingual support. We are especially proud of creating a meaningful solution that combines technology and culture, making heritage preservation more accessible, engaging, and scalable.

What we learned

We gained experience in full-stack development, AI integration, and deploying production-ready applications. We also learned how to design systems that are not only technically sound but culturally impactful, ensuring technology serves real-world needs.

What's next for UmucoCore

We plan to expand the platform by adding more cultural content, improving AI capabilities, and enhancing multilingual support. Future updates include user-generated content, voice interaction, and broader African cultural integration, transforming Umuco Core into a leading digital heritage ecosystem.
