Inspiration
Many multicultural families in the UK struggle to find authentic, reliable groceries in one place. Shopping is often fragmented across multiple stores. We set out to create a single, trusted platform that brings global food essentials together with consistency, quality, and accessibility.
What it does
Umrah Supermarket is a web-based platform that allows users to browse and explore authentic global groceries. It presents clear categories, curated bundles, and a simple, structured shopping experience using mock data to simulate real usage.
How we built it
We designed the product around a clear brand system (black, gold, and minimal layout), then built the frontend using React and Tailwind CSS. All product data and interactions were handled using mock data on the frontend to simulate a real e-commerce experience. The application includes key pages such as the landing page, groceries, basket, account, and admin.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge was balancing speed with quality within a limited timeframe. It was easy to overbuild, so we focused on core features. Another challenge was ensuring the design reflected a premium and trustworthy brand rather than a generic supermarket interface.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We delivered a cohesive product that combines branding, marketing, and a functional web interface. The platform feels consistent, structured, and aligned with its purpose. The use of bundles, clear navigation, and a simple admin interface demonstrates strong product thinking, even with mock data.
What we learned
We learned the importance of clarity in both design and development. A strong brand direction simplifies decisions. We also learned that focusing on core functionality and user trust is more valuable than adding unnecessary complexity.
What's next for Umrah Supermarket
Next steps include integrating a real backend, enabling payments, and improving logistics, such as delivery and stock management. We would also expand the product range, further develop the loyalty system, and scale the platform to support multiple locations across the UK.
