Inspiration
We were inspired to build this website on our search for dorms to live in next semester. We found it surprising how difficult it was to find useful information about the dorms, including a lack of pictures and very little community feedback. As such, we have decided to build this website in hopes of making the search for living places easier for students of UMD.
What it does
The website lets UMD students be more aware of what housing they are choosing to live in before they need to lock in a dorm. This comes in the form of providing more information about where they will be living; they could also improve their on campus experience by making better decisions on dorm locations, amenities, and layouts.
How we built it
We initially had trouble getting started but once we got into the flow we couldn't stop. This project really tested our knowledge of the various languages we knew and allowed us to improve as developers. We ended up using many features, such as CSS hover animations, interactable maps, HTML sections, and so on.
Challenges we ran into
Setting up the backend was difficult at first, but we were able to overcome it after our search lead us to Supabase as the easiest to use option that happened to be free of charge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of the clean design, the ease of use and convenience, the fast responsiveness, and the overall utility of our website that we managed to build in only 6 hours.
What we learned
We learned how to use Supabase, a BaaS open source platform built off postgreSQL, expanded our knowledge of GIT for collaborative projects, and learned more JavaScript functionality
What's next for PlanetDorm
In the future we plan to add off campus apartments, user authentication and login, a suggestion submission box, room and floor plans, and better descriptions on dorm types.
