Inspiration
One of our team members is a big fan of the hit game UmaMusume Pretty Derby, and as the theme is medieval it was a natural fit to recreate as a jousting game.
What it does
From the main menu there are four options:
- "GO GAMBLING!!!" - here you can use acquired Currency to unlock new untrained horses. If you get a duplicate horse you are refunded half the cost.
- "HORSE COLLECTION" - here you can see all unlocked horses in a pokedex-like screen
- "CAREER MODE" - this is the main gameplay mode. Across 36 turns, you can train up a horse to be the greatest Jouster imaginable. Every 12 turns there is a joust against another horse-in-training, and at the end of the career your horse graduates as a trained horse. Plus, each horse has its own unique story mode featuring visual novel events, sometimes featuring other horses.
- "MAIL IN JOUSTING" - here, you can joust your trained horses against another players. simply export one of your horses to a text file and send it to another player, or import another's text file, and watch as the two trained horses joust.
How we built it
This game was built in Godot 4.5.1.
Challenges we ran into
Our team is very new to Godot, only one of us having completed a game in it before, so we had to work around the unique limitations of the Godot engine.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of being able to complete this game in spite of not knowing the engine, and finding work arounds to problems (such as mail in jousting being a replacement for our failed online)
What we learned
- The godot engine
- Sleep is important
- Not to trust people that say their code works
What's next for UmamusuMedieval: Pretty Jousting
- We only managed to implement 12 of the 24 horses we had ideas for, so it would be nice to add more
- The career mode is also lacking some features from UmaMusume, such as veteran horses and support cards
