Inspiration

I was inspired by a similar project I started to try and solve the last time around, but I came up short as the code got too complex and I could not handle my own route schemes. Now I felt like it was time to conquer the challenge again.

What it does

The web application allows university of michigan students to sign in and represent a student organization that they are apart of. Then they can go ahead and start submitting requests for alumni with specific characteristics to come to a scheduled event in the future. Meanwhile, an Alumni Center staff member can login to another endpoint of the web app and take action on these requests. All the while email notifications are sent to both parties to help keep them informed.

How I built it

I used angular.js on the frontend and node.js on the backend (with express framework). The styling of the front end is based off of the material design lite scheme from Google. I am very happy with how this application turned out because I think it is relatively stylish and flows well.

Challenges I ran into

Around the halfway point I was crossing into dangerous territory where in the past I would just scrap the project and claim it was getting too complex and too hard to understand. However, I stuck with this project through the entire hackathon and can proudly say I built the site from scratch with the design coming from my own mind.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I am proud that I completed an application that became such a large code base. I am proud that I accomplished good front end design and used some bells and whistles.

What I learned

I learned that Hackthons are really fun and rewarding (this is my first one) ps. I'll be back next year!

What's next for UM Alumni Request Gateway

I will use it now with the Alumni Center and the rest of my team for another class and we will work together to make the app more understandable and usable.
