The inspiration came from visit of a local Health Care Supervision Authority for which our University delivered tens of pieces of protective shields made by 3D printing. They have 0 viruses and bacterias inside building due to the presence of germicidal lamps which works through the night. Due to the carcinogenic side effect we think about alternative sources of radiation and found information from scientists from Columbia University that ultraviolet radiation UVC is safe for human and kill germs, bacteria and viruses also on top of surface. Due to our core business in non-destructive monitoring techniques we are working with miniaturized devices, nevertheless we have also excellent experience from field of nanomedicine, working on redox properties of nanoparticles whose are in size of new coronavirus. On daily basis we are using laptops, smart phones to control our sensors, that is why, based on our experience, idea was born how to combine ultraviolet miniaturized lamp and smart phone to kill virus on top of surface in one hand, and in the other use latest augmented reality approach.
What it does
It allows by using fast screening light technique to eliminate virus on top of surfaces and close proximity by safe procedure without high energy consumption and harmful effect to humans and mapping quality of decontaminated surface by augmented reality.
How we built it
We have idea and concept how can be KIL2COR AR module equipped with special miniaturized far-ultraviolet radiation lamp manufactured from components and software for mapping scanned zone of decontaminated areas on top of surfaces. But the need of special company with investor is needed for successful realization and putting on the market. Regarding software extension design the proposed software solution is a functional use of augmented reality as advanced technology. Augmented reality (AR) is an auxiliary tool for detecting and scanning an object in 3D. The application uses augmented reality to recognize an object or place by scanning, using the camera on the device, and thus detects the total range of UV radiation. The immediate effect is to see whether or not the area selected by the user has been comprehensively exposed to the disinfecting effect. For this purpose, the spatial augmented reality (SAR) was chosen. Spatial augmented reality through mobile devices has a high potential and range of application possibilities, as no expensive equipment is required and the comprehensive use of SAR is sufficient through a mobile device with standard hardware components and a camera. The proposed solution is available to a mass of people as it does not require hardware equipment. The aim is a control, protective means for measuring the effectiveness of the effect. A camera device is required for detection which is standard in smart phones, tablets etc. By launching the KIL2COR application, the camera automatically starts scanning the area or object marked by simple polygons so that the user can correctly mark the place he wants to treat. It chooses the area of interest (this is necessary so that the application does not perceive, for example, the surrounding chairs that would ultimately be out of radiation). If the selected area is irradiated correctly, the object will be highlighted, if not, the application will prompt the user, for example, to change the viewing angle or to finish scanning the entire object.
Challenges we ran into
The goal is to have user friendly application for all types of smart phones. The installation manual will be available on social networks. It is important to have minimized version so it can be easily carried. On the other hand, when a client requests a larger stationary version, we should be able to supply it. Ultraviolet mobile virus killer should show daily operating times, amount of surface to be decontaminated, deviation from the average, comparison of values with other users by location, branch and also by countries. We do not currently register the same device on the market. Our product will be uniquely developed with a high degree of innovation. Easy installation, reasonable price and wide placement on the market make this product exceptional.
We are proud that we have built interdisciplinary team with strong background from different disciplines (advanced materials, nanotechnologies, chemistry, physics, augmented reality, software development and business) but also spectrum of high-level scientific advisors, researchers, innovators and McGyvers, business strategist.
What we learned
It hasn’t been done any research looking in complex way at how UVC affects Covid-19 specifically, but studies have shown that is efficient against coronaviruses such as SARS. The radiation warps the structure of their genetic material and prevents the viral particles from making more copies of themselves. Up to the latest research data, far-UVC has a shorter wavelength than regular UVC (in certain extent dangerous to skin) experiments in the lab have shown that it doesn’t damage DNA. It is the aim of our solution to prepare Ultraviolet mobile virus killer based on mercury-free ecologically friendly far-UVC lamps. The unique mobile virus killer as additional miniaturized external device will be handled via charging connector to smart phone and will be made of materials containing colloid Ag in order to have self-cleaning ability and thus decrease presence of further harmful species including bacterias. In this context we expect to apply our devices on the top of surface such as clothes, parts of textiles or to eliminate viruses in short-time exposition to hands, public surfaces etc.
What's next for Ultraviolet mobile virus killer KIL2COR
The project company will be a consortium of private companies and universities. In the business area, we plan to certify the product first. We will establish an investment fund that will offer shares in the fund for investors or project company will issue company bonds. The basic focus of the fund will be investing in innovative products. At the same time, we will ask the Slovak government for support in the form of direct investment projects related to COVID 19. The sale will be realized through our own e-shop and also the e-shop of individual smart phone sellers.
