Inspiration

As students, we are constantly loosing our items and never have any luck finding them. In addition, there have been other students at UMass who have also lost their items and make posts about them on Facebook pages, however, not everyone are in these Facebook groups. Also, with so many posts, these posts about lost and founds can be hard to find again. Although many of us have lost items, there have been many occasions where we have found lost items but have no idea how to contact the person who has lost the item.

What it does

From the items we UMass students have lost and founded, this website, ULost IFound is a place where students can log the items they have found or lost along with the location. Using our interactive map, students can find pinpoint their items. For those who don’t want use the interactive map, we have a page that shows a data table with items that are lost and found. This feature has a filter that users can filter the location that the item was lost or found. There is also a search bar that users can use to easily search for the item that is lost or found. When a student has found an item, they can submit a small form through the “I Found” button. When a student has lost an item, they can submit a small form through the “I Lost” button.

How we built it

We built this website through React, Javascript, CSS. We did not use any HackUMass resources, workshops or mentors. We worked collaboratively in person to complete this

Challenges we ran into

It was very difficult to learn how to use the React repositories. We mainly struggled on completing the interactive map. Through much research, we were able to figure out the repositories, as well as complete the interactive map.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to be able to complete the project in time and submit it. In addition, we had great communication between each member of the team that resulted us in working so well with each other. This ultimately led to the success of completing this process. In addition, we are proud to have learned new frameworks like React.

What we learned

We learned how to use React and are all now more comfortable with web programming. Overall, this hackathon was a great learning experience with friends!

What's next for ULostIFound

Fixing small bugs and improving some functionalities to make it more efficient and simple to use for students. It would also be nice to expand it to other campuses or schools.
