Inspiration

How often has it been that you're reading a blog post / research paper / your friend's intellectual rant about climate change that you stop and go "Huh, what does that word / phrase" mean? Wait, let me open up a new tab and search for it. And down we go the rabbit hole! Wait, what was I reading about?

We have always wanted a non-disruptive way to lookup contextualized meaning of terms / phrases we run into when we are reading something new. And this addresses that problem.

What it does

Select text on any website, right click and select 'ULookUp' and get realtime explanations. You know, like Apple's LookUp feature, but, Useful.

How we built it

  • We used our favorite LLM, Claude (wink) to help us write the front end code for the extension.
  • With help from the mentors and organizers, we collected early feedback and iterated to build a useful tool.

Challenges we ran into

  • Providing the right context to the LLM prompt to generated the right contextualized concise response

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • This is a tool which we have wanted to build for some time now and now we've built it, and we'll be using it in our daily lives.

What we learned

  • Keep it simple, silly.

What's next for uLookup

  • Gamified learning - Create flashcards, MCQs, summary of what one learnt every day (Monetization - Under a “Pro” subscription)
  • Reduce barrier to entry by serving explanations from ourselves instead of outsourcing to an LLM API provider
