🎵 Uku — the friendly ukulele tuner for Android

A tuner, a chord library, and nothing in the way.

Uku gets first-time ukulele players in tune in seconds. No musical knowledge, no account, no ads, no internet. Just pluck a string and one big, playful shape nudges you up or down until it sings.

💡 Why Uku

Every tuner app I tried felt like a cockpit: spectrograms, dB meters, ads between strums. I wanted the opposite, something a kid could hand to a parent without a single word of explanation. So Uku became an exercise in subtraction: everything a beginner needs, nothing they don't.

🛠️ How it's built

Pure Kotlin and Jetpack Compose with Material 3, in a single activity. Automatic string detection: Uku hears which string you're plucking, so there's no mode picker. Pitch detection with the YIN algorithm, lightly smoothed so the shape stays calm instead of twitching. One big playful shape instead of a needle, with a soft haptic tap the moment the note locks in. A chord library drawn on a Compose Canvas, crisp on any screen size. Fully offline, with zero network calls at runtime. And for the curious, a hidden shape-jump mini-game 🎮
