Inspiration

A lot goes on in a college student’s mind. It can sometimes feel like you’re alone and that there is barely any time to socialize. One of the first questions brought amongst the team was “Who’s your favorite music artist,” giving us the idea that music is what brought us together.

Music is something that can create those unexpected bonds, some that might even last a lifetime. Introducing students to a way of socializing through music makes the process much faster and more efficient at making those connections. We guarantee that bringing up music taste is an automatic conversation starter.

What it does

Once you connect your Spotify and log into your university account, it directs you to that specific university server. When you are within a certain radius of someone actively listening to the same artist as you, you match. That allows you to have the option to become friends and further get to know each other by sending direct messages or exchanging socials.

How we built it

  • Used Figma to build our prototype and the functionalities we wanted in the app.
  • Used React Native and programmed in TypeScript to help us make an iOS app of our idea.
  • Programmed on Visual Studio Code.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenge we ran into was programming. Trying to make an iOS app with little to no experience in using React Native or programming in TypeScript was especially challenging since it was an entirely new concept. Luckily, we were able to program the first few screens we produced on Figma to work on a prototype iOS app.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

With the little experience we had in programming TypeScript and using Figma, we were able to make our idea, UHEARD, come to life. Making a prototype that was able to execute an understandable idea to the user and programming the first few screens of our iOS app was a major accomplishment and something we celebrated because our skill set wasn’t quite as developed.

What we learned

Throughout this process, we all got the learning experience of working with a group on a project. Since our team had little exposure to TypeScript and Figma design, we were successful in learning the basics of these software.

What's next for UHEARD

Due to not having much experience and this being our very first hackathon, there were things we could not implement or program. Next, we would like to research and learn more about the programming languages and API’s intended to be implemented in order to further develop the basic app we have now. This could be a step towards having a complete application. Thus, helping college students connect with others through UHEARD.
