Inspiration
As we sat brainstorming our idea for the hackathon, we realized that a breath of fresh air would help us clear our minds. Suddenly, it struck us how impactful a little bit of exercise could be. Exploring nature is a wonderful way to relax and get some important exercise that most adults in Canada do not get. Even apps designed to assist you in hiking are made for experienced people. There is no app that allows you to go on simple strolls and explore your own neighbourhood, you need to already be a "hiking pro". Because of this, we wanted to create an app that is beginner-friendly and encourages people to step outside.
What it does
Our solution to this prominent issue is Breeze, a beginner-friendly exercising app that encourages all individuals to get outside in the summer. The app is designed to encourage its users to get outside and explore their very own neighbourhood. Whether you choose to go biking, rollerblading, running, walking, hiking, scootering, skating, camping, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, backpacking, or more, it is perfect for you! It will allow you to choose what level of intensity you wish to experience when you first log in. Then, it will recommend some ways to explore your community, including suggestions based on the weather. You can even go to our equipment page and find rentals! The community page will allow users to post on forums and find a buddy to go outside with. Finally, the profile page will allow you to keep track of all of your data and progress.
How we built it
Using Figma, we created a design a for our app. By creating pages and organizing the web flow, we prototyped the user interface. Most of this design was planned out on whiteboards and sketchbooks until we decided on our main pages. Figma allowed us to make the app come to life. Afterwards, we used HTML on Visual Studio Code. As we are not very experienced with this language, a mentor recommended to us that we use ChatGPT and Bootstrap to attempt and recreate the main page.
Challenges we ran into
One of the first challenges we ran into was coming up with an idea that did not already exist. We originally had the idea of a gardening app for first time gardeners and, only after fully fleshing it out, we realized that the app already existed. Instead, we decided to think about areas in apps that we have personally found faults in. After a long night of brainstorming, we were finally able to settle on our idea. As well, we had a hard time coming up code for the project. As a group, we did not have much experience with code and any experience we did have was based in C and Python, both languages that would be difficult to incorporate. After talking with a mentor, we were able to use AI and other resources to create an HTML code that resembled our Figma page. But, it was not easy. The code often would not work, and the formatting was especially difficult and took many, many, many iterations. In the end, we were able to come up with something that mildly resembled our Figma.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are a team of first-time hackers and beginner coders who came into this hackathon with little prior experience and knowledge. Most of all, we are most proud of how much we have learned. Our Figma is a great representation of our idea come to life and we have overcome any challenges we came across. Most of all, we are proud of our collaboration and teamwork.
What we learned
We learned to work together as a team, code using HTML, and how to use Figma. We also learned how to identify a problem, create a solution, prototype, and iterate a design. As a team, we were able to delegate tasks based on our strengths in order to create the best product possible in the most efficient manner.
What's next for Breeze - Aqueous Amigos
In the future, we are hoping to monetize the app by implementing a premium or subscription feature where the funds would be directed towards marketing, app optimization, and more. We would also love to increase inclusivity and accessibility so that we are supporting and accommodating of everyone. For example, for users who experience visual impairment, we can include a setting or button that reads out what is on the screen. Lastly, we are hoping to improve the app through the collection and integration of user feedback that is gathered through ratings, surveys, and more. This will allow us to improve interface, features, and usability to create the best experience possible for our users.
