Inspiration
uGUD inspired by the mental health struggles of our team, our family members, our friends, and of healthcare workers. We recognized the difficulty being consumed by high workloads and making the first step towards getting help.
What it does
uGUD is a journaling app that leverages natural language processing to perform a sentiment analysis on the user's journal entries. The app reflects the user's mood, tracks their progress over time, and offers suggestions to take care of their mental health.
How we built it
The uGUD app is built on Android Studio. It's sentiment analysis capabilities are powered by a natural language processing toolkit that was adapted to a mental health assessment application.
Challenges we ran into
It was difficult to adapt existing natural language processing tools to suit uGUD's functionality, especially when finding an appropriate dictionary.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of being able to achieve a basic sentiment analysis. We believe this goes a long way to helping the user recognize their needs and to seek help if needed.
What we learned
We learned the importance of prioritizing core features for a proof of concept prototype. Getting the mental health sentiment analysis right was more important to us than building an entire app at once.
What's next for uGud?
The biggest feature we will look to implement is a chat bot. A uGUD chatbot would allow the user to have more natural conversations with the app and the user can even be prompted to speak on the health habits such as sleep, exercise, and diet. This way, uGUD can make specific suggestions to help the user improve the status of their mental health.
