UgaTrade Whale Watcher

Inspiration

Investing in the Uganda Securities Exchange (USE) can be intimidating for many retail investors. While institutional investors have access to advanced market intelligence and analytical tools, ordinary Ugandans often lack timely, understandable information to make informed investment decisions.

We were inspired to build UgaTrade Whale Watcher** to bridge this gap by making institutional market insights accessible to everyone. Our goal is to empower new investors with transparent market data, educational tools, and a safe environment to learn before investing real money.

'## What it does

UgaTrade Whale Watcher is a smart investment dashboard focused on Uganda's capital market. It allows users to:

  • Monitor large institutional ("whale") buy and sell transactions.
  • Receive real-time whale alerts.
  • View top-performing institutional portfolios.
  • Copy simulated institutional investment strategies.
  • Practice investing using a simulated $10,000 portfolio.
  • Track profit and loss across Uganda's leading listed companies, including Stanbic Bank Uganda, MTN Uganda, Airtel Uganda, DFCU Group, and British American Tobacco Uganda.

How we built it

We built the application as a modern fintech dashboard with a dark-themed user interface optimized for clarity and speed.

Since comprehensive real-time institutional trading data for the Uganda Securities Exchange is not always publicly available, we developed a Simulation Engine that generates realistic large-volume transactions. This allows users and hackathon judges to experience the full functionality of whale tracking and copy trading while demonstrating how the platform could integrate with official market data in the future.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge was accessing reliable real-time institutional trading data for the Uganda Securities Exchange. To overcome this, we created a realistic simulation engine that powers live demonstrations while clearly indicating when data is simulated.

Another challenge was simplifying complex financial information into an interface that beginner investors can easily understand without sacrificing useful market insights.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Built Uganda's first prototype focused on whale tracking for the Uganda Securities Exchange.
  • Developed an interactive copy-trading experience for retail investors.
  • Created a realistic investment simulator with a virtual $10,000 portfolio.
  • Designed a modern, intuitive dashboard tailored for financial decision-making.
  • Demonstrated how technology can improve transparency and accessibility in Uganda's capital markets.

What we learned

This project reinforced the importance of designing technology around users' needs. We learned that simulation can be a powerful educational tool when real-time data is limited, and that intuitive design is essential for helping new investors understand financial markets.

What's next for UgaTrade Whale Watcher

Our next steps include integrating official Uganda Securities Exchange market data, adding AI-powered investment insights, expanding coverage to all listed securities, introducing personalized market alerts, and launching a mobile application to make investing more accessible across Uganda.

We believe UgaTrade Whale Watcher can help increase financial literacy, encourage greater participation in Uganda's capital markets, and contribute to a more inclusive digital financial ecosystem.
