Inspiration
Our inspiration for this project was both personal and community-wide. After surveying students around campus, we found that most students had issues with our current bus system, and agreed that overcrowding was a major problem. To help combat this issue, we devised an application extension to better inform riders (students) of bus capacity and prevent missed buses and wasted time.
What it does
Our application is a visual replica of the current UGA bus, with the addition of a capacity tracker. The capacity tracker is available for all routes and buses, indicating the percentage of space filled on the bus, depending on the number of people that IR sensors scan. In the future, given more time we could implement the extension onto the existing application, providing students and users with real-time information regarding bus capacity. In addition, the app provides a suggested bus to users, helping with optimal route selection and saving time.
How we built it
We developed a front-end prototype of our tracking concept through FIGMA. Through FIGMA we were able to collaborate on the design and prototype of our mock application in real time. This application allowed us to simultaneously work on different portions of the project at different times and locations throughout the process. Using various plugins such as Figmap, we were able to develop a functioning map that served as the primary foundation of our app's functionality.
Challenges we ran into
Our first and biggest challenge was learning how to properly use FIGMA and the various tools that it contains. We also ran into trouble when linking interactions in proper sequence to replicate the real world use of the bus app.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were super proud when our application functioned similarly to the actual application and the routes displayed the proper timing and capacity levels. Seeing our front-end application working showed us the capabilities of our concept and a visual representation of the current app's potential.
What we learned
We learned how to work under pressure and how to expertly navigate through complex problems. We quickly learned the intricacies of UI/UX development of a real application, and conceptualize an idea that would be applicable and useful to the community.
What's next for UGA Bus Revamp
We hope to present our idea to the UGA application developers and implement the capacity tracker to provide students with a better bus experience
