Inspiration Life is hard while working from home

Due to the covid-19 pandemic, we must work and study from home. For students living on campus, eating has become a big problem, so we consider developing an app to help students find food on campus and provide them with some convenience.

What it does

Overview of restaurants nearby UF and offers features of directions and delivery. Our app will provide information about restaurants on campus, and we will clearly state the restaurant’s address, business hours, and whether it provides takeaway or delivery. Our app will jump to the restaurant’s official website, takeaway page, and map location.

How I built it

We watched many tutorial videos to understand the concept like intent and adapter, collaborated with each other from brainstorming to debuging, and used all we learned from in and outside of school.

Challenges I ran into

  • We were all new to Android Studio and started from zero, so the biggest challenge was to cooperate with the platform.
  • As we are all working from home, it was also important for us to communicate with each other even more considerable.
  • As for the technology, learning to utilize Google Map API, searchView, listView, adapters, and the toolbar with online resources was very time-consuming.
  • When we are merging files, we have to figure out the missing activities in androidManifest.xml.
  • Because of Covid, many restaurants have different operating hours, and we had to look for the correct ones to ensure user experience. ## Accomplishments that I'm proud of
  • We worked ceaselessly for 24 hours straight and accomplished more than we knew we could as four first-time-hackers.
  • Delicate layout and refreshing views for users.

What I learned

We each learned different functionality of Android Studio and shared them with each other.

What's next for UFood

The biggest thing is that we hope to add the functionality for users to check waiting-time so they may spend less time either wondering when they could get their food or standing in a line.
