Inspiration

We've always found that our university's student site is clunky, hard to use, and a bit confusing. Just to see your grades, you have to click several buttons, some of which you need to search for. Tracking your progress? Even harder. So we wanted a solution that makes it easy for students to track their academic progress.

What it does

uDash is a simple university student Dashboard. uDash allows students track program requirements, electives, credits, and grades. It takes this information and displays it using graphics for easy visualization.

How we built it

We built the backend using Python and FastAPI. The frontend is built with Native and Vite, using JSX, HTML, and Tailwind CSS.

Challenges we ran into

Deploying. Unfortunately, we ran into several issues trying to deploy the program with Vercel and Render.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

An accomplishment we're proud of is the user-friendliness of uDash. With simple buttons, easy-to-understand metrics, and a clutter-free design, uDash is perfect for stressed students trying to see their academic progress at a glance.

What we learned

One thing we learned is how to code simultaneously with others. Throughout the hackathon, we ran into issues with formatting standards, merge conflicts, and debugging problems. We've learned about the importance of fully planning out a project before starting, especially when multiple people are working on it. On the technological side, we learned how to properly connect frontends with backends, especially when they're being worked on by separate people. We learned how to integrate APIs with our project and even attempted to use the Gemini API in it.

What's next for uDash

Next up, we would like to connect uDash to pull program information straight from the universities' course pages. Currently, uDash is limited to one program, as we had to hardcode the requirements for the sake of time. uDash would serve many more students if it were able to display information about any program offered at any university. Another feature we'd like to add is a grade calculator per course. Currently, uDash only allows inputs of final course grades. It would be helpful if students could keep track of their assignments, quizzes, and midterms throughout the term as well.
